British Airways is the flag carrier of the United Kingdom. It was created on March 31, 1974, after the British government established a British Airways Board to oversee the two nationalized airlines, British Overseas Airways Corporation and British European Airways. British Airways extended its connection, and in 1999, American Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and Qantas formed the airline alliance Oneworld. British Airways remains a member of Oneworld.

British Airways serves over 170 destinations in 70 countries, including eight domestic and 26 in the United States. It has a fleet of 253 aircraft and 47 orders. It was one of the largest 747 operators, having previously operated the -100, -200, and -400 aircraft beginning in 1974.

Delays, cancellations and refunds

Delayed flights

If your flight is delayed by 5 hours or more, you can get a refund for the journey you didn’t fly. If your flight is delayed by more than 3 hours at your final destination from causes outside the airlines control, you may be able to claim compensation.

Cancelled flights

If your flight has been cancelled, you can claim a refund. Visit Manage My Booking on the British Airways website to find the options available to you.

Flight connections

If your flight is delayed at the origin within 3 hours before your departure, or you miss your connecting flight, British Airways will automatically rebook the next available flight.

If a delay or cancellation of five hours or more disrupts your connecting flight (within 24 hours or less) booked under the same booking reference and you wish to no longer continue to your final destination, the carrier will provide you with a return flight to your origin including a refund for the parts of journey you didn’t fly.
